Short answerIf your concern is the water you drink and cook with, the $475 AquaTru Classic is the cheapest certified answer here: IAPMO-certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 58 and 401, including PFOA and PFOS, at about $1,640 over 10 years. It does nothing for showers, laundry or appliances, and it suits one to three people better than a big family.

The AquaTru Classic is not a whole-house system, and that is exactly why it is in our reviews: if your worry is the water you drink and cook with, this $475 countertop reverse osmosis unit is IAPMO-certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 58 and 401, including PFOA and PFOS, and costs about $1,640 over 10 years. It does nothing for showers, laundry or appliances, and its small tank and hand filling suit one to three people better than a large family.

Who it is for

City-water households whose worry is drinking water, especially if your utility shows PFAS in our PFAS lookup. Our whole-house vs reverse osmosis comparison walks through when point-of-use is enough.
Renters and anyone who cannot cut into plumbing. It sits on the counter and plugs into an outlet.
One to three people drinking and cooking with a modest daily volume.
Homes that also want lead, fluoride, nitrate or arsenic covered, which no whole-house carbon tank we review is certified for.

Who should skip it

Your problem is at every tap. Chlorine or chloramine smell in the shower, iron stains or sulfur smell need a whole-house system such as the SpringWell CF1 for city water.
Large households with high drinking-water use. The clean tank holds 0.75 gallons, and the filters are rated by volume as well as time.
Hard water above 10 grains per gallon, or iron, manganese or sulfide at or above 0.1 mg/L. Scale plugs the membrane; soften or treat first.
Tight counters. It measures 12 by 14 by 14 inches and weighs about 17 pounds.
You want it out of sight. The AquaTru Under Sink (from $395) uses the same filters and holds the same IAPMO standards.

What is in it

The Classic has four stages in three filters:

Pre/Carbon filter (stages 1 and 2): sediment and carbon.
Reverse osmosis membrane (stage 3).
VOC carbon filter (stage 4), or the Alkaline Mineral Boost VOC version.

You fill the tap-water tank by hand. The unit pushes water through the filters into a 0.75-gallon clean-water tank. Reject water collects back in the tap-water tank and has to be poured out; the data sheet lists 75% efficiency, meaning roughly 1 gallon of reject for every 3 gallons of purified water under test conditions.

The product page FAQ quotes different dimensions (13 by 14 by 7.5 inches, 9 pounds, a 0.5-gallon tank) that look copied from AquaTru’s Carafe model. The spec block’s figures, used above, match the Classic.

Certification reality check

AquaTru’s certifications are real and listed under IAPMO R&T, covering models AT2000 to AT2050:

The precise limits matter in three places:

PFAS is PFOA and PFOS only. AquaTru’s page says “Certified to reduce 84 contaminants: Forever Chemicals, PFAS, including PFOA and PFOS.” The certification covers PFOA and PFOS; other PFAS are not on it. The data sheet shows a combined 1.5 µg/L (1,500 ppt) challenge reduced to a maximum of 0.02 µg/L (20 ppt), at least 97.5% reduction.
No current P473. An older owner’s manual says the unit is certified to NSF P473, but IAPMO’s directory shows no P473 file for AquaTru today.
Arsenic is pentavalent only, up to 50 ppb. If a well test shows arsenic, ask the lab which form.

Why this matters for a whole-house buyer

For drinking water, this $475 unit carries more certified claims than any whole-house system we review. The only whole-house system certified for PFAS beyond PFOA and PFOS, the Aquasana HealthShield, costs $2,099 up front and about $11,000 or more over 10 years.

Flow, capacity and sizing

The IAPMO listings rate it at 0.06 gpm and 54 gallons per day. What limits a busy household is filter volume:

Pre/Carbon filter: 600 gallons or 6 months. 600 ÷ 182 days is about 3.3 gallons a day before volume, not time, sets the change date.
VOC filter: 600 gallons or 12 months. 600 ÷ 365 is about 1.6 gallons a day.
RO filter: 1,200 gallons or 24 months. 1,200 ÷ 730 is about 1.6 gallons a day.

So if you draw more than about 1.6 gallons of purified water a day, the VOC and RO filters reach their gallon ratings before their dates, and the costs below rise.

Inlet limits from the data sheet: TDS up to 1,500 mg/L, hardness up to 10 grains per gallon, iron, manganese and sulfide under 0.1 mg/L, chlorine under 2 ppm, pH 3 to 11, 39 to 100 F, cold water only.

Installation needs

None beyond counter space and a 120V outlet. There is no plumbing, no drain and no installer, so the install cost in our math is $0. If your water is hard, AquaTru sells a $19.95 descaling kit.

Running costs over 10 years

Assumptions: $475 Classic with the standard VOC filter; filters changed on the time schedule (under about 1.6 gallons a day); one set of filters in the box.

That is about $164 a year. The Alkaline VOC filter ($49.95) adds $90 over 10 years. AquaTru’s combo packs carry no discount: the two-year pack is $259.65, exactly the sum of its filters.

The warranty is 1 year on the purifier, excluding filters, with a 3-year extension for $49.95. The money-back guarantee runs 30 days.

How that compares with whole-house spending

The middle row is a practical compromise: an uncertified carbon tank for chlorine or chloramine in showers and laundry, plus certified RO where you drink. It still costs well under half of HealthShield’s lower figure. The HealthShield row is the one to pick only if you want certified PFAS reduction at the shower too.

Owner complaint patterns

AquaTru scores 4.0 from 326 reviews on Trustpilot. Recent negative reviews cluster around:

Leaks from the tank seating. One owner said the water tank “is very difficult to put in place, which causes water to leak” (August 19, 2026); another reported water pooling inside the base (July 1, 2026).
Filters wearing out early and costing more than advertised. One owner said filters need replacing well before the stated time (September 11, 2026); another said the Pre/Carbon and VOC filters had to be changed together at 300 gallons (September 8, 2026).
Filter lights that do not reset. One owner said all the lights stayed on after new filters went in (September 10, 2026).
Slow warranty handling, including a European owner’s claim unresolved after three months (September 16, 2026), and a shipment sent to the wrong address twice.

Positive reviews consistently mention taste and an easy setup. The pattern is ergonomics and filter life, not certification or water quality.

Alternatives

Plumbed under the sink, higher output: the Waterdrop G3P800 (list $999, $759 with a checkout code) is IAPMO-certified to NSF/ANSI 58 and to NSF/ANSI 53 for PFOA and PFOS only. It needs a drain connection and its warranty requires municipal water.
PFAS at every tap: the Aquasana HealthShield, WQA-certified for five PFAS.
Chlorine taste at every tap, cheaply: the SpringWell CF1 or Aquasana Rhino, neither certified for contaminant reduction. Pairing one with an RO at the kitchen sink covers both jobs.

Questions people ask

Is the AquaTru Classic certified for PFAS?

For PFOA and PFOS, yes: IAPMO R&T lists it under NSF/ANSI 53 for PFOA and PFOS with its VOC filters. Other PFAS are not on the certification, and IAPMO shows no current NSF P473 file despite an older manual mentioning one.

Does the AquaTru Classic need plumbing?

No. You fill its tap-water tank by hand and plug it into a 120V outlet. Reject water collects in the tap-water tank and you pour it out.

How often do AquaTru filters need replacing?

Pre/Carbon every 6 months or 600 gallons ($29.95), VOC every 12 months or 600 gallons ($39.95), and the RO filter every 24 months or 1,200 gallons ($59.95), whichever comes first.

Can I use the AquaTru Classic on well water?

Only within its limits: hardness up to 10 grains per gallon, and iron, manganese and sulfide under 0.1 mg/L. Many wells exceed those and need softening or iron treatment first.

Should I buy a whole-house filter or the AquaTru?

If PFAS or lead in drinking water is the worry, a certified RO like the AquaTru covers more contaminants for far less money. Buy a whole-house system when the problem is at every tap: chlorine or chloramine in showers, iron staining, or sulfur smell.
