Short answerA sensible chemical-free iron and sulfur filter for wells that test within 7 ppm iron, 8 ppm hydrogen sulfide and 1 ppm manganese, at about $3,220 over 10 years installed. It holds no certification, and it does nothing for bacteria, hardness, low pH or PFAS.

The SpringWell WS1 is a reasonable choice for a private well with iron up to 7 ppm, hydrogen sulfide up to 8 ppm and manganese up to 1 ppm, as long as a lab test confirms your water sits inside those limits. It does nothing for bacteria, hardness, low pH or PFAS, and it carries no third-party certification, so the water test SpringWell makes you buy is the most useful part of the order.

Prices checked September 2026, under SpringWell’s 15% sitewide sale: $2,231.25 for the WS1 (1 to 4 bathrooms) and $2,677.50 for the WS4 (4+ bathrooms). MSRP is $2,625 and $3,150. Every order also requires a Level 1 + Bacteria water test at $134.25, non-refundable, and SpringWell holds the order until the results are approved. With a plumber, 10-year ownership comes to about $3,220.

This is a research-based review. We did not install or run a WS1. The specs come from SpringWell’s product page and 2020 manual, and the owner patterns come from Trustpilot, the BBB and an installer’s published review. Our method is on how we research.

Who it is for

Wells with iron, sulfur or manganese symptoms: orange or brown stains, a rotten-egg smell, or black staining. Our guides to iron in well water and sulfur smell explain what each symptom points to.
Water that tests inside the limits: iron at or under 7 ppm, hydrogen sulfide at or under 8 ppm, manganese at or under 1 ppm, and pH between 6.5 and 10.
Owners who do not want chemicals. The WS1 uses air, not chlorine or peroxide, and needs no salt.
Homes with a drain and an outlet near the pressure tank, and a septic system that can take regular backwash water.

Who should skip it

Iron above 7 ppm or hydrogen sulfide above 8 ppm. Look at peroxide injection, such as the US Water Systems Matrixx InFusion (rated to 20 ppm iron and 30 ppm hydrogen sulfide, from $2,982.95).
pH below 6.5. You need a neutralizer ahead of it. SpringWell sells a calcite neutralizer for $1,814.45.
Tannins. SpringWell sells a separate tannin system from $2,787.62; the WS1 makes no tannin claim.
Bacteria. The manual says not to use it on microbiologically unsafe water. You need disinfection (UV or chlorination) on top.
Hard water. It does not soften. The WSSS1 combo with a salt softener is $3,123.75. See salt-free vs salt softeners.
Only light iron and no smell. A cartridge system such as the iSpring WGB32BM ($535.99, iron to 3 ppm) costs far less up front; we compare the brands in iSpring vs SpringWell.

What is in the tank

The WS1 is an air injection oxidation (AIO) filter. The control head draws air into the top of the tank, where it forms an air pocket. Water passing through that pocket oxidizes dissolved iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide into particles, and a bed of Greensand Fusion media below catches them. A backwash flushes the particles to the drain and recharges the air pocket.

The 2020 manual lists the kit: the tank, an electronic head (set up through the Legacy View app, with a 9V battery backup), a bypass valve, a 50-foot drain line and a power supply. No sediment pre-filter is included. If your well carries sand, plan for one.

SpringWell states a media life of 10+ years. It does not list a replacement media price in its store.

The WS1 tank measures 10 by 54 inches (64 inches with the head). The WS4 is 13 by 54 inches.

Certification reality check

We found no WS1 listing in the NSF, IAPMO R&T or WQA directories (searched September 27, 2026), and SpringWell does not claim one. There is no NSF/ANSI 42 claim for iron, manganese or hydrogen sulfide reduction and no published performance data sheet with test results. The 7, 8 and 1 ppm limits are SpringWell’s ratings, not verified numbers.

Some context helps here. EPA treats iron (0.3 mg/L) and manganese (0.05 mg/L) under secondary standards, which cover staining, taste and odor rather than enforceable health limits. Missing certification matters less for stains and smell than it would for lead or PFAS. It does mean you are the one who verifies performance, so retest the treated water a few weeks after installation.

What the warranty actually covers

SpringWell’s lifetime warranty covers tanks, valves and fittings for the registered original owner at the original address. The electronic control head is covered for 5 years. The “6-month Performance Promise” offers troubleshooting and parts, not a refund.

The number that matters on a well is backwash flow. Your pump and pressure tank must deliver 5 gpm (WS1) or 7 gpm (WS4) during the cycle, or the bed will not clean properly. Check your pump’s output before ordering.

Other limits from the manual: 25 to 80 psi, 36 to 120 F, pH 6.5 to 10 (6.8 to 10 for the WS4). The manual lists a 3/4-inch connection; SpringWell’s product data says 1 inch. Confirm with SpringWell before buying fittings. Our sizing guide covers matching flow to bathrooms.

Installation needs

Drain. The included 50-foot line must not be pinched or kinked, and it should end at an air gap per local code.
Power. The adapter must plug into an outlet that is not controlled by a switch.
Bypass. SpringWell auto-adds a bypass valve for $58.79.
Programming. The manual’s app settings run the cycle at 2:00 am, recharge the air pocket daily, and run a full backwash every 5 days: 10 minutes of backwash, 20 minutes of air draw and a 5-minute rapid rinse. The first regeneration takes about 45 minutes, with no water to the house during it.

The product page describes a nightly cycle; the manual separates the daily air recharge from the 5-day backwash. Either way, water goes to the drain. By our arithmetic from the manual’s settings: 5 gpm × 15 minutes of backwash and rinse is about 75 gallons per full backwash, and 73 backwashes a year is roughly 5,500 gallons. SpringWell does not publish this figure. On septic, that water goes into your tank.

For the cost math we assume a plumber at $800, reflecting a drain run and outlet access near the pressure tank. Your quote may differ.

That is about $322 a year. The WS4 on the same terms is $3,670.54.

Not included, because SpringWell publishes no figures: electricity for the head, the roughly 55,000 gallons of backwash water over 10 years (free from a well, but it runs your pump and loads your septic), a sediment pre-filter if you need one, and a rebed if the media gives out before year 10. The last is the real risk. If your iron sits near 7 ppm, a shorter media life is plausible, and SpringWell does not list what a rebed costs.

Owner complaint patterns

Undersized for the water. Mid Atlantic Water, a competing dealer, reviewed SpringWell feedback on Trustpilot, Google and the BBB. It calls “an iron or sulfur system that never quite solves the problem” the most common serious complaint, and describes an owner with 12 ppm iron on a 7 ppm-rated system still dosing Iron Out three years later. SpringWell’s required test now screens for this before shipping.
The test requirement as a surprise. The most recent Trustpilot review (1 star, November 2025) says the test purchase and a two-week wait were not disclosed before the card was charged. The reviewer cancelled.
Support speed during troubleshooting. The same installer review lists slow responses once a system is in the ground.
Returns. Installed systems are not returnable unless SpringWell deems them defective. Unused returns carry a 10% restocking fee plus return shipping.

For scale: SpringWell’s own site shows 4.7 stars from 460 reviews for this system. The BBB lists 21 closed complaints in 3 years across all SpringWell products (not accredited, not rated). Trustpilot has only 2 reviews on an unclaimed profile.

Alternatives

Heavier iron or sulfur: US Water Systems Matrixx InFusion injects hydrogen peroxide ahead of catalytic carbon and is rated for 20 ppm iron. It needs peroxide refills and a rebed every 3 to 5 years ($498.95 for the 10 gpm kit). Our well water picks compare it with the WS1.
Lower budget, light iron: iSpring WGB32BM at $535.99, with a $104.99 iron cartridge rated for 50,000 gallons at 3 ppm.

What does the SpringWell WS1 remove?

SpringWell rates it for iron up to 7 ppm, hydrogen sulfide up to 8 ppm and manganese up to 1 ppm. It makes no claim for bacteria, hardness, tannins or PFAS.

Why does SpringWell make me buy a water test?

The Level 1 + Bacteria test ($134.25, non-refundable) is a required add-on, and SpringWell holds the order until the results are approved. If your water is not compatible, the system is refunded in full.

How much water does the WS1 send to the drain?
