Owner reports
Review roundups (softeningwater.com) report several owner complaints that the AP917HD-S cartridge clogs well before its 100,000-gallon rating on sediment-heavy or well water, with owners adding a separate sediment pre-filter; distributor reviews (Judge.me, 32 reviews, 4.88) show no recurring complaint.
3M drinking water filtration is now branded Aqua-Pure Water Filtration, owned and manufactured by Solventum (3M spin-off); packaging may still say 3M. AP904 is the top of the AP900 series (AP902 sediment only with AP910R; AP903 carbon with AP917HD; AP904 adds scale inhibition with AP917HD-S). Solventum does not sell online ('Where to buy' only); price is from AquaPureFilters.com (Aqua Pure Solutions, 'Your Authorized Solventum Distributor'), whose store data shows an unrealistic compare-at of $1,126.52. The replacement AP917HD-S costs $312.21 there, about 72% of the complete system price. NSF listing (NSF/ANSI 42, Plumbed-In, New Ulm MN facility) covers chlorine taste and odor and Class III particulate at 10 gpm service flow and 100,000 gal; the 20 gpm figure is the maker's intermittent peak rating, and the scale claim is not certified. Cartridge is not designed for water with precipitating iron, bacteria or chloramine. Solventum page: 'It is recommended this system be installed by a qualified professional'; the head is sweat-in-place stainless steel (solder connections). Manual: 25-125 psi (pressure limiting valve needed above 80 psi), 40-100 F, keep 3 in clearance below for cartridge changes. Weight is Solventum's 3.4 kg net weight.
